My name is Spencer Smith and I have been living and working in Jackson, Wyoming since 2020.

PHILOSOPHY

It is the general expectation that artists develop a recognizable style for which they are known. I find this notion counterproductive and commercial, as the entire idea of art is about continuous exploration and learning. Fluidity, not crystallization, is the soul of the expressive artist.

I believe in ‘art for its own sake,’ where the act itself and the resulting works are to be enjoyed for what they are as opposed to what they represent. The process teaches us about ourselves and the many natural laws we obey with every action, every movement, and each decision. Here, we find the truth of ourselves from without, as a reflection of each moment's experience.

The confusion lies in the question, what is art? This… is for the observer and the actor to answer.

Most fundamentally, one can find spiritual satisfaction in art and the creative process through the practice of presence, and as such, deeply observe and engage with the physical world. It is one that becomes infinitely more complex the longer and more intentionally we look. It is this active presence that allows for the indulgence in the transcendent reward inherent within the act of creation.

‘The meaning of life is to lose itself in its own creation.’ With this, life and art are not exclusive of one another. They are one and the same.
